clicking next to shifter/ hard shifting tranny? 1997 C230 160K

I have a 97 Mercedes C230 with 160 k miles. There is a weird clicking sound and the trasmissionis late downshifting. Plus sometimes slips between 2 and 3rd. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks, Tony P
