Cargo cover / hat shelf problem

Hi
I have an '03 Kompressor Coupe. There is a cargo cover (MB calls it a hat shelf) that lifts when I open the hatch lid. It is lifted via 2 thin cords that are connected on one end to the cargo cover (via a spring-coil retractor) and to the hatch lid via a molded plastic socket that snaps onto a smallball, which screws into the hatch lid.
Since Iregularly remove the cargo cover to put 'stuff' into my trunk, the little retaining clip on my cord wore out and broke off. The dealerquoted meseveral hundred dollars foran entire hat shelf, but all I want to do is replace or repair the cord with it's molded end.
Anyone else run into this, and were you able to fix or repair the cord?[&:]
Thanksfor any help you can lend-

The best bet would be a wreckers yard. The hat shelf is unchanged since 2002 (I believe). You don't need the entire shelf. I have had both retractors pop open and have had to rewind the cords. When the retractor pops apart the pieces are independent of the actual shelf. A wrecker may have a damaged shelf, from which, you could remove theretractors.
Just a thought.
