I had a very similar issue and tried most of the same things that you did and after they replaced the spark plug wires, the issues stopped.

how many plug wires for this C 230, is it easy for me to replace them myself?

should i replace coils as well?

When do you know when wire harness goes, symptoms to look for, and why so expensive?

I have noticed that acceleration is a little sluggish, got to find decent independent mechanic.

hi never really had this problem but the od time mine has stalled or started to race was when the tank has low fuel and all the crap comes down the pipe the engine either stalls or reves up to stop it from stalling my need a petrol filter change or it could be somthing as stupid as the throttle cable sticking check this first will save you a few quid if its ust that

I now have 120,000 miles on 98 C230.

IDLE STILL rough in DRIVE and less in park, still idle fluctuation when cold only at first stop and idle. No power loss at speed. I changed MAF AT 40,000 miles, throtle boddy clean at 100,OOO MILES.

I WANT TO SEE DIY PICS OF SPARK PLUG CABLES change ON 98 C 230 AS CULPRIT OF IDLE FLUCTUANCE and possible motor mounts for vibration.

any constructive ideas by anyone is appreciated??

if ur idle is higher then suppose to be then u just need to put the ignition on and do nothing else. wait for a 2-3 minutes. this is the way how u can teach ur throttle body for the new gap. after ur idle speed will be good then ur transmission will be smooth again.

Halfthy!!! My god where were you 5 years ago! That fixed 90% of my problems with the rough idle and acceleration shuttering I was experiencing.

https://mercedesforum.com/forum/mercedes-c-class-10/98-c230-rough-idle-4019/

When my 98' c230 does start to shudder, the only fault code that comes up is 'P0304' "Cylinder 4 Misfire Detected" so I'm thinking I might replace the ignishtion coil, but still unsure if that will completely fix it.

Either way replacing the Cam Shaft Sensor was a noticeable difference.

Thanks Halfthy!!!

btw I'm at 139,000 miles now and still running. can't believe what a beast this little four banger is.
