benz dealer
I came across a very nice 1999 C280 Sport with only 22,000mi. on the clock.
Black on Black.
The car is for sale by an older lady who bought it new from my local Benz dealer.
She is waiting for her new 2008 C300.
All documentation from new is available, including the original invoice at her name.
I went through the pile of invoice she has (including every single gasoline invoice since day 1), Nothing major has been done on the car since new. Only regular maintenance by the book.
Price $12,900, probably negociable to $12,500.
I got to replace my aging 1989 260E with well over 400,000 on the clock.
What are the weak points on a C280?
Thanks.

that is a great buy. When I was looking for a c280 i came accross one that was a 2000 c280 sport with only 53,000 miles and i almost droped when i saw it and its price. What you are looking at is very special and if the car turns out to be allright then you should definatly jump on it.
As the relatively newowner of an 06 C280 4matic, I have found little to bitch about. The adaptive automatic is much more active than the 4 speed auto that you are used to in the 260 and it will take some getting used to the fact that it shifts much more often and differently than the old 4 speed. Speaking of speed, I had a 93 300E 2.8 which was one of the most anemic engines in the 20-60 mph range that i've ever had. You either stomped the accelerator and reved hell out of it or you wondered if you were driving a Citroen 2CV in that speed range. Simply put, the 280 will run the ***** off of the 260E you presently have and get better mileage doing it; (i'm averaging 24.5 mpg in mixed winter driving in Northeast Pa, which is to say that the ambient temperature is always responsible for kicking on the enricher circut this time of year). Seems like a hell of a buy to me!Regards,Will
will3 your c280 is another animal than that of a 99 c 280 The 06 uses a 272 engine and the 99 uses a 112 engine.Bottom end pretty much the same but valvetrain is completly differient. More hp and puts the power down a little better I think for the 272.
That being said... The 99 is a great car. Known problems are normal 112 problems.. Mass air occasionaly, not enough that would deter me from buying such a car. Put coils and wires on a few but only when there is a misfire or slightly rough idle. Didn't do all just the affected ones. Not bad for an mb tech to diag or yourself with a generic hand held and some know how. Trans electrical connector bushing is known to leak. Easy fix. Maybe a cranksensor IF you have ano start. I've put in a cat converter or two and some O2 sensors. MAYBE some rear diff seals. Did a few fuel sender units for fuel guage reading improperly. cluster for odo, temp, and time/gear lcd's bad. cluster bulds. wheel bearings<- if repacked every couple years will last along time, probably life of car.
Normal maint. items.
oil change (mobil 1)
Lower control arm bushings (usually a one time fix from what I've seen) I think they changed the design.
Steering stablizer otherwise known as a steering shock.
Lower ball joints.
wiper blades (who hasn't)
fuel filter, air filter, brake flush (every two years recommended or flex b) coolant flush (i believe every 3 or 4 years look in the book for sure) spark plugs (every 5 years recommended or 100,000 mi. I usually go the 100,000 mi rule. depending on driving conditions.)
tie rod ends
flex discs on high mi cars.
shifter bushing (cheap) if the shifter feels a little sloppy it probablyhad dryrot and crumbled, eventually falls out.
pads and rotors all the way around
light bulbs
tires (usually last around 20,000 or there abouts)
alignment
You wanted all you got it. You also have to realize I've work on several of the vehicles and going from what i've seen on more than just one car.
Overall this is a GREAT car. One of the last prod years so most of the "bugs" areworked out. Don't be frightned off by the list this will be over several years and many miles. Sorry for the random post but wrote down what came to mind. For better on the maint. items look in the service book. There is no trans dip stick. This is a sealed trans and should not have to be changed. Just a check during service. unless the bushing leaks, usually a safe bet it will take 1/2 qt trans fluid (MB only of course) after replacement. Well I think that's all for now hope this helps.
