Auto box fluid level
Hi, Can anyone tell me how to check the fluid level in the auto box of my 1999 C240 ? I have just bought the car (my 3rd Merc). My local garage say only MB can check the level, is this right?
The car has done 43,000 miles and has had only one owner and as you may have guessed I am in the U.K.

You would have to buy the checking dipstick from a dealer or parts store. My auto tranny is the same. You can't use any old tranny dipstick either, lengths are different. The way I figure it, when I take in for service the dealer is supposed to check it. If the tranny fails for lack of fluid, I'll got back to the dealer and have them fix for nothing.

Thanks Allan, I will go and see my local MB dealer. My car is a C 240 Elegance with a 5 speed auto box, it seems from other posts that the C240 was not sold in the U.S.A. My car is a 2.4 V6 with 2 spark plugs per cylinder. The C280 was discontinued over here (U.K.) in about 1996 but has since been reintroduced in the new shape C class. My 240 drives very well and I hope it will be as reliable as the 96 C180 it replaced, which I owned for nearly 5 years in which time it cost me 2 tyres and a wiper blade!

RE: Auto box fluid level
Your welcome. My C280 has a 2.8 V6, twin spark, the C280 was discontinued in the colonies after model year 2000. I also has the 5 speed electric tranny, with winter and summer gearing, and the 4th gear sport driving mode and drive by wire accelerator. Plus stability, traction controls, brake assist. I find the car very enjoyable to drive. I added a K&N filter 2 years ago and it does make a difference, especially with the programmable tranny setup. One of the big reasons I bought this car was the comfort, I have failed back syndrome and the Mercedes is the only car I can drive for more then a half hour. One thing, I had come communication with a person from the UK and I love the Euro lighting set up, with the city lights, DRL, We are a backward country in some things.
