Default All trouble lights come on, sticks in first gear

This 1999 C230 is new to me, 200,000 miles. "good price"
Often when I start up, all engine check lights go on, and the car sticks in first gear. About the time I slowly make my way to repairman, it starts working.
This often happens when it's raining. Sometimes, I stop, back up, brake, cut engine, restart, and it works. Right now, it's snowing, hovering around zero, and I have lots of lights, no gear but first.

It has been to my fixit man many times. Many changes of expensive equipment: same story.

My bargain gas-saver is getting expensive.
Ideas????

Take it to Mercedes. I've had BAD BAD expeireinces with non-branded repair shops. They usually just guess what it is and repair it. Which in turn just costs you more in the long run.

I agree with shelcurt. I took my Mercedes to Pepboys to get a tire rotation, alignment, replace the rear rotors, and turn the front rotors (Damn keeping my car parked within literal spitting distance of a large body of salt water and only driving on the weekends). When I got it back it had a shimmy at 60-80 MPH, pulled to the right, and the tires were rubbing the wheel wells. That's some pretty basic maintenence to screw up, and while the tires were a size too big for the car (same tires as when I bought it six months ago, I blame the previous owners), you'd think they'd have done better job.
