98 C220D, EPC problem

I was wondering if anyone has an idea on what is causing my C220 diesel to misbehave?

It is a 1998 non turbo with 206,000 (yes 206,000) on the clock. It has been running very well, the engine is still original & has, as far as I know, been untouched from new other than regular oil/filter changes.

Afew weeks ago the EPC light came on, with a subsequent loss of power, it sounded if the fuel injection pump had been retarded, as some white smoke was being emitted. & the tappets were noisy. On re-starting he engine it was fine below 2000 revs, but as soon as you exceeded 2000 revs the light came on with a repeat of the loss of power.

I left it overnight, started it to take it to a garage & surprise, surprise it was 100% OK. I then travelled 1100 miles on all sorts of roads with the engine purring!.

Then yesterday a return of the fault. Restarting returned the fault immediately the revs went up.After an hours wait restarted & again, perfect, I drove 60 miles last night, all A OK.

I changed the mass air sensor (only because I had one to hand), still the same.

Any input would be gratefully received

Many thanks

I Thought that I would post an update on this problem in case anyone else develops the same symptoms.

I took the car to an independant diesel specialist & put it on their computer. It registered that the injector pump was at fault, I was a little dubious as to this as I thought that if the pump was faulty it would be a permanent fault, not intermittant.

I carried on for a couple of weeks with the fault getting more regular up to the point it was occurring daily. This was too much of a pain so I had the pump changed with a Merc. recon. unit. I then discovered that this model is a fairly rare unit packed with electronics & it was the electronicsthat was causing the problem!

6000 miles later, (215000 total) she is purring like a kitten again, confidence restored!

welcome Jasper to the world of electronic fuel pumps my c220d 1994 model was the first i believe to get this pump (correct me if i am wrong you guys out there)

it has a fly by wire throttle (scary) and it used to leak small drips of diesel when it was cold this has since stopped have you checked yours when it is cold please get back to me on this .

as to your c220d do you change the oil and filter regularly as a high mileage engine will not run well on thin oil cheers eds.....

Hi & thanks for the post.

I have not ever seen any diesel leaks from the injector pump, either the old one nor the new one recently fitted, but after you have mentioned it I will keep a look out! The car is garaged overnight so any leaks will/should be obvious.

I change the oil & filter every 5000miles (about every 4 weeks) & have done since I bought it with 70000, it had Mercedes services prior to this.
