Default RE: 95 C280 check engine light!

I am in the same situation. About 3 or 4 months ago, the Check Engine light came on ('95 C280 110,000 mi.) indicating code 1700. One excellent mechanic said problem was on transmission end (he doesn't handle auto transmissions). I went to another excellent mechanic with whomI've had long experience and hefirst replaced the main and transmission wiring harnesses. When that didn't work, he replaced the head sensor. When that didn't work, he had the local dealer look it over. They had no ideas, which was sort of disappointing. I asked about buying a used computer diagnostic controller so I could simply reset the Check Engine light whenever it came on with code 1700, but the controllers that are compatible with '95 model year cost more than the car.

My mechanic is still thinking about the issue. (He owns the same exact car. Also, hehasn't charged me anything after the ($1800) charge for the wiring harness.) Our latest idea, which we've yet to implement, is replacing the speed sensor.

BTW, I've noticed the Check Engine light comes on after I've been driving for about 10-15 minutes and I slow down, not abruptly, but say from local road 30-40 mph speeds to stop for a light.

Any updates on with your car?
