2001 C240 All front lights went out

Had a scare the other night. With my sweetheart driving we started up and left a country playhouse parking lot. While going down a dark country lane about a minute later, all the front lighting went out. Engine was still running, I think that some dash lights were on and I don't know aboiut lights in the rear. Stopping the car and restarting with the key, they came back on and I don't know if it has ever happened while driving in daylight. We run with lights programmed to be on whenever running, and never touch the light switch. I wondered if the failure happened in the amount of running time equal to the time the lights would automatically turn off after we leave the vehicle, but not sure. Any ideas of a way to avoid this very serious safety problem from recurring? Local MB dealer said they never heard of the problem. We've experienced many electrical problems with this thing. Keys, seat positioning computer, mirror module, heat control valves, headlight & turn signal sockets, and rear light cables all replaced while under warantee. I greatly enjoy driving the car, but have to say that the 'lectric is close to tasting like a lemon.
