1998 C280 transmission problem

RE: 1998 C280 transmission problem
I have one good idea, don't buy it. Mercedes transmission, can be costly to fix. The 98 wasn't electronic, I don't think, so for the $5K you get the car for, it might cost you another $5K to have it fixed. Will the owner let you take it to a dealer or a Mercedes shop for a prepurchased inspection? For around $100 to $150 bucks you could save a lot of money and heartache, IMHO

RE: 1998 C280 transmission problem
I have had four M-Bs and when my current 300SEL lost all but first gear, my mechanic said that was Mercedes' default reaction to low transmission fluid. He fixed a leaking transission hose, added several quarts of transmission fluid and I was back on the road! If you like the C class in question, you might say you will buy it conditionally upon your mechanic's examination, and see if the problem is low fluid.

Jeff
