This is going to sound dumb and there must be some way to look this up but I just had to ask...... mywifescar has the remote with the push button flip out key (like a switchblade) . It has what I believe to be an IR remote because it seems to only work in line of sight range to either the door , trunk,or rearview mirror. I should be right so far and I hope I am explaining right. There is a company that sells IR extenders with add on features like starting the car turning on the AC or heater tuning your radio to one of your pre set radio stations opening windows ....... you get the idea..... The only thing they ask is " the 1997 C280 IR remote use a 40Khz or 56kHz carrier frequency ? Any body know ???

Boy...u almost fool'd us.
If it was not implemented in the first place, no matter how ueber a remote you get, it will not remotely start the car. Nor will it turn the heater on, sound the horn, play the CD, turn the steering wheel, etc.
...97 C280 with a key fob that works like a switch-blade? press of a button and the key springs out?
uh....i need some scotch.

Well, unfortunately I couldn't tell you the frequency of the IR remote but what I can say is that I know what you're on about, the key itself looks rectangle in shape with a small button either in the right or left hand corner, press that and the key springs out of the side.
Fly_Major_Fly, believe it or not there are places out there that can upgrade the remote / alarm system to do these things, costs a bit though!!
Anyway, the only person that I know of that might be able to help is SLEEPWALKER, this guy knows so much he could most probably tell you what colour socks you're wearing!!!

There is a German firm that makes a remote engine starter for the C-Klasse. Maybe 1998-2000 C-Klasse
One of the big bosses in Stuttgart had his child harrased while leaving a soccer game and asked one of Mercedes electric options suppliers to make a devise. As I recall it cost maybe $500 USDollars. I was very popular for a while but no longer. Might still be made, maybe?

I bought the 56kHz model does all it said it would except you have to leave the radio on if you want it to play
It starts the car, turns on the fog lights, ac , unlocks the doors, trunk and rolls down the windows . The hardest part is figuring out what button to push on the 6 button remote.
