Default 1995 C Class Catalytic Converter and Gearbox Issues

I own a 1995 Mercedes C220 Elegance Auto (Petrol). Recently, I was told that my catalytic converter was on it’s last legs and would need replacing soon. Shortly after being told this, the car started holding it’s gears longer and has become quite jerky when changing gear. I’m just wondering if the gear changes are related to the loss of power from the deterioration of the Cat or whether these are two separate problems as I don’t want to replace the cat then find there is large scale work to carry out on the gearbox.
Also, with regard to changing the Cat, can this be changed without changing the middle and rear sections of the exhaust. As changing the full exhaust isn’t really cost efficient bearing in mind the value of the car.

Thanks
