My 03 E55 chirps when it shifts form 1st -2nd around 2000 rpm. Is this normal? It's worse when the car is cold. It's loud enough that it startles people walking on the sidewalk.

I am hearing a similiar clicking sound that is very loud when the car is cold and quiets down as it warms up. Could this be the lifters?

 

The sound is normal. All the 55 engines do it. It is the clutch on the SC engaging the SC.

 

My 03 S55 was making similar noises that were extremely loud. I had a leaky rear cv joint but when the dealer got in there they decided to replace the whole rear axle and bearings. They just said they didn't like the way it looked? The car now runs better than I can remember with no loud squeaks/squeels from the rear. It solved my problem good luck.
