1984 300d turbiodiesel 195k mi.

History -

193k mi. - Bran Used to us.
193k mi. - Problem 1 - Overfilled oil due to checking it cold and getting a low reading.
one trip driven 70 mi. , oil drained to proper level.
at about 194.5k mi. I am adding alot of oil(1-1.5 qt/200mi). The last time added 3.5qt because the vehicle sat 2 days.

Car Dies in mountain pass #1 in Orygun.
Towed and repair is done on valve cover gasket replacement.

Drive 100 mi.. Mountain pass #2 Kills the car(had to come to a complete stop for a flagger, the car shuts off when I stop).

Where do I start at testing the compression. I have a compression tester that goes up to 300psi.

THANK YOU
Josh & Janelle

Hi Josh,

There is also a fuel strainer in the tank which could be causing a restriction. If you were able to measure the pressure in the feed line fromn the tank using sleepwalkers diagram, you may notice high suction pressures. This would indicate a blocked tank strainer. This may fix your cutting out problem, but not explain your oil consumption.

As for checking your compression pressure, You will destroy the guage you have if you try to use it. You need a guage specially for diesels. My diesel guage goes up to 800 Lb/sq.in, but expect about 350 Lb/sq.in.
