Not sure if you year was affected by degrading biodegradable looms supplied by Benz, depending on which models, between about 92 and 96. Known issue, no recall.
You can inspect your harness by peeling back some of the covering on a bundle of wires in the engine bay. If the individual wires' insulation is all cracked and bare wires exposed, then you need a harness.
It is not all that hard of a job to do. Get a new harness and replace it yourself. 2500 for a small engine car seems excessive. maybe get other quotes if you are not ready to do this yourself.
But it may not be the harness at all. By not starting, do you mean engine spinning on electrical starter only, and not starting? Or not even spinning with the starter?
Have you considered a Crank Position sensor? If the engine spins without firing off, especially once the engine is warm, it could be the CPS.
