W123 water pump mystery

I changed the coolant on an 85' 300D. Then after the new coolant was in the water pump won't circulate the fluid. The electirc auxillary circulates to heater block. Could this be a blockage, all hoses look fine. Flushed clean with water just before adding new fluid. The car sat for a week with no coolant could the pump rust or corrode and freeze up? If so would the fly wheel still turn or would it also be stuck with the belt just sliding across it?
Replaced the thermostat, no change. Where would a blockage occur to completely cut off fluid and if that happened would the pump be making a strange or descernable noise?
Very confused, john

It could be air locked pocket of air at the pump will stop it from circulating. Not sure if thats a problem with that car. Other cars with a remote tank have did that to me before. I usely drill a small hole in the termistat to let the air through and a 1/8" hole still lets the car warm up normally.
