I have no idea of the spec of this car however if the lock/latch on this car is vacuum then my previous suggestion is all that you can do.
You need to create a new source of vacuum.
Beyond that I don't know how we can help.

Ok here goes,
I speak only from my 85 experience, a long time ago.
The engine did not stop because it needs vacuum from a reservoir to pull in a actuator which does the same thing you did when you pushed the stop lever.
I would think you have a vacum leak somewhere.
The locks are activated by the same vacuum, this vacuum is built by a engine mounted pump which also serves the brakes.
All MB locks are capable of being operated manually, the drivers door usually has a vacuum valve to control the others.
The trunk lid lock has two positions, one to unlock with a source of vacuunm the other with apush from the button, these are acvtivated by turning the key 90degrees one way or the other. I just dont remember. if you have a leak you wont be able to develop enugh vacuum to move the locks.
My opinion, I dont know if you can start the car by moving the stop lever off rest, this is hypothetical. Otherwise go to a mb dealer, you discuss vacuum pump problems, a lot of it resides there.
