Default Transmission shifting

I'm new to Mercedes ownership. I have an 89 300SE and it feels like it needs a higher final gear. It makes all the shifts smoothly and all but at 60 MPH it is running at 3,000 RPMs. I may be just used to 5 speed automatics. Seems like it just needs another gear. Thanks Tom

I have a 90 300SE that is the same way. I have yet to hear from anyone that knows if this is normal or not. Hope we can get some answers. Hate to think of the cost to have the transmission fixed.

According to the MB dealership service dept. it is perfectly normal. It is a 4 speed transmission and it starts out in 2nd gear unless you really punch it. It shifts 2 times. I still get 22 MPG on it though and that's good for a heavy car like this. They do suggest that you change the fluid every 20 K miles though.

ya true buck and when u get your fluid done make sure they change all 15 quarts and not 3 like most "jiffy lube" places do, when u have 15 qts of bad do they really think 3 good will do??
