Default Speedometer E300-W210

Hi All
I have a 1996 E300D - W210.
The speedo works intermitently. Usually starts working for a short while after going over a bump, so I'm assuming it is electronically operated & not cable driven. It would seem like a loose conection somewhere, my guess would be on the speed pickup sensor. Does anyone know where this sensor is located?

I believe your speedo is digital electronics and therefore NOT as simple as you suggest although it does appear to be a connection issue.

The (same) speed signal is used by ABS, ASR, Cruise, ESP etc so if these are functioning OK its likely to be at the cluster end.

Try unplugging and replugging the cluster connection...you will require a tool to remove the cluster from the fascia,,,available from eBay...BUT the fault is most likely within the cluster.

Possible its an edge type PCB connector...this is what causes the myriad of lighting problems to occur on 1998 on packs....but it all depends if you wish to venture into the innerworkings.

Of course it could also be the speedo gauge itself.

Hi Stuart

Thanks for the advice. I will have a look where you suggested & see what I can find. I'm assuming that mostly this is a clean up & possibly tightening of the connections.
Any idea where the sender/sensor is? I assume on the gearbox (automatic) or one of the wheels.

Thanks for everything

As I stated the speed signal is used for multiple purposes.
The speed signal consists of 4 separate feeds, one from each wheel rather than the gearbox.
Not sure of your model etc. but if you don't have ABS etc then the speed signal came from the gearbox as you state.
The speedo signal on ABS cars is usually from the FRH wheel however should this not be working your ABS will not be working.

I suspect bottom line is that your speedo head has gone defective but I've given you some steps on the way.

Stuart.
