Hi -
Many people on these MB forums get an inexpensive handheld scanner from Harbor Freight called OBDII- CAN (Part No. 94169). It will reveal and clear common DTC's and the Check Engine light (CEL). It comes with a booklet and CD listing the description of the codes. It normally sells for $59 but is often onsale for $39 on their website. If you live near a HF store you can printout a copy of the online ad (when it's on sale) and take it to the store. Most store managers will give you the lower price. I purchased the scanner based on recommendations here and on other MB sites and am very satisfied with it. It will work with any car '96 and newer.
Up from there are software packages (in the $200) range which run on a laptop or PDA and give some realtime data feedback of certain operating conditions as well as the usual OBD-CAN stuff.
Once you get the DTC's (Diagnostic Trouble Codes) you can post them as just the associated description is often not quite enough to determine the fix.
