Hello Gene,
My experience is that, the Antenna Mast which is plastic loses traction with the geared wheel inside as a result of wear overtime. This is very common and I am talking from my own experience. Though this is the simplest, the mast alone for these models are quite pricey.
When buying you need to get the Part No. of your antenna to get the proper mast.
Replacement is simple. This is my experience. Please ask a professional opinion.
And if this is the problem, I might be able to beat dealer's price.

Thank you. I received one other similar response. Are you saying I need the part number off the existing antenna? (Not the existing mast?) Do I understand that you may have the mast only for sale? Thanks.

part # 140 827 00 01 75 cm, checked my warehouse database and this the the search result for you W140 Antenna Mast. Dealer's cost is about $152 + tax. Before you replace this, have somebody turn the radio on and off while you try to hear by the antenna if the antenna motor whirs. If the motor is working, then it could be the antenna Mast. I may be able to beat the dealer's cost substantially. Pls. verify part no. with your dealer for your car. Removal and installation is very simple.
