Default Possible to Install After-Market CD Player?

I have a 2001 C240, which I bought new several years ago. It has the basic audio setup – a Mercedes-branded tape deck and radio and no CD player. For Christmas I am getting an aftermarket CD/MP3 player (a Panasonic CQRX400U). Three questions: (1) can I install it myself or should I take the car to the dealership for installation? (2) I’m assuming my steering-wheel controls will no longer work with the audio system, but other than that, is the new CD player compatible with my car? (3) I didn’t get GPS so I have an empty dashboard slot under my existing radio. Can I install the new unit there and use both the new CD player and the old radio, or do I need to replace the existing unit? Thanks for any help/suggestions!
