Oil pump rebuild?

I have an 1982 380SL engine torn down to the last nut. It is an engine that I have very little history about. Can I test and then rebuild the oil pump while it's out, i.e. make it good as new? Any suggestions as to the process, what to look for...thanks. Dave

Well there you have it. I don't KNOW if anything's really wrong because I don't have any good history on the engine. Rather than put it back in and hope it's going to outlive all those engines you mention....I'd rather test it if possible on my bench. If it tests perfectly I'd be very, very happy. I don't want to rebuild it, but I don't want to install it and pull it out a couple days later, either.
