Oil change questions....
Got the wife a 99 ML320 she has been wanting. I have a couple questions. First, the dealer I got it from put a blend oil in it. I picked up the full sythetic today. Do I need to change the oil filter also?? Is there anything I have to reset after I put in the oil in or can I just drain and refill, do not want to screw up the service computer?? Service B was done at 49,000 miles... I have 52,000 on it now.. 8200 miles till next service... but I want to replace that blend oil..Second are there any special tools needed to do oil changes or general maintenance?? Third, any advice to watch on this car??? It only has 52K and was real clean and looked solid so I bought it.. Any in-put would be greatly appreciated...

RE: Oil change questions....
Honestly, The blend oil is just fine. You need to draw the oil out of the dipstick tube. Be sure to buy good quality filters. MB gets such a high change interval because of high quality filters. I use Knecht filters but there are other quality ones. Read your manual to see how to reset the oil change light. Be sure to use the weight that MB recommends too for your climate. Hope that helps

Thanks for the info. My service indicator says I have 8200 miles till next service..So, the blend Which is new should be good for the next 8200 miles? I already bought new mobile one synthetic, $50, but have not put it in yet.. Also, what do you mean by drawing the oil out of the dickstick tube??? Last, do you know a place on-line where I can get these good filters as you mentioned?? Thank you again for the info...We really like the car and hope it lasts for us.....

Warren, I use knecht filters. There are several others that are good too. There are banners on this forum for MB parts. Also see if you can determine when the transmission fluid was changed. That's very important for the longetivity of MB. Mine is recomended every 20K miles and be sure to change the torque converter fluid too.

RE: Oil change questions....
At most dealerships they suck the oil out from the dipstick tube. You can always drain it from the bottom. I would recommend buying a filter from the dealer. your going to need an oil filter wrench to take the old one out. I really wouldnt use synthetic at the milage your at. At my dealership we dont use synthetic on any MBZ that uses the blade key. If you do decide to change the oil, i wouldnt change the service counter until you reach your remaining 8k miles. To reset your service it involves your holding the reset button and cycling
the key.
the key.

MBZ TECH
What oil do you use? I have an '01 SLK 320 with 77,000 mile on it and it is ready for an oil change. I can get my hands on a Wix filter, they are well know for quality. Also, it's Summer, so 60-100 degrees F. every day. I think 20-50W or 10-50W. What say you?
Thanks in advance!

Ok, So at 52K I should not use synthetic??? What oil do you reccomend to go another 8K? The oil in it is new and It's a 10-40 or 30 Blend from the Lexus Dealer where I bought it. So Regular, Blend or synthetic oil ?? What is a blade key??? What if synthetic has been in it since day one, I doubt it..??? I heard of that class action lawsuit in which the oil was turning to sludge and MB said go to a sythetic for the FSS maintenance. I guess the regular oil cannot last 11K and turns to sludge, that makes since to go to the synthetic then. Need to know before I put the $50 of 0-40 Full sythetic Mobile one in it.....

RE: Oil change questions....
FWIW, most of the dealerships are using Mobil 1 0W 40 in all cars - diesel or gas. This oil meets MBz 229.5 spec. There are a number of other oils that meet 229.1/229.3/229.5 specs. If you went for an oil change at any of the dealers in my area, this is the oil they use.
Autozone (Wallymart??) sells the oil for $5/qt.
