Default newbie electric window question..

Hi all im new to this forum and have joined because i cant get any sense out of anyone for the problem i have. Firstly the car is a 1998 clk 320, the problem is to do with the electric windows..they work fine but do not drop when you open the doors or go back up when you close the doors, this makes shutting the doors awkward and its is damaging the window trim and more to the point its letting water in! I understand this is a common problem especially when the doors ice over (england) and the window cannot drop, the guy i bought the car from said they worked fine and both stopped working all of a sudden. I am a mechanic by trade so i dont mind having a mess with them but i dont know where to start...could it be just a simple fuse? and before i strip the door cards off id like to know if i need to replace anything in advance so i can do it all in one hit. Ive tried the window reset with ignition on (windows down 5 seconds, windows up 5 seconds) but not worked....any advice greatly appreciated

probably the door jam switch by the striker.that lets the door know its open or shut. little black button where the door latches.
