Default Ignition or vacuum?

In the past few weeks of driving my new 79 300D (Sedan), I've come across a few quirks, but two more serious than the rest. Would love any advice folks could throw at me. The last rig I worked on was a 2000 Pontiac (which I'm driving again until I can troubleshoot and repair the Benz) and before that a 67 F250 and 75 Torino Elite (Canadian Model)
Anyway, last week my ignition locked up and wouldn't let me turn the key. I put the car in N and pushed it backward a few feet and all was well. This has happened a few times since with the same result. (Let's call this Exhibit A)
Yesterday, I took the car on a quick out-of-town trip and when I returned to the office t wouldn't turn off. The key was removable, and when in the off position, radio, power windows, etc acted as if the car was off, but it kept running.
After a few hours, my husband was able to take the car home (I was on deadline in the newsroom) and wiggled the key enough the engine turned off. But he is worried because he said it "died hard."
I feel there's a precedent with the ignition lock, but vacuum hoses are also a possibility.
Any ideas?
