Default Ignition Switch removal 190E

Hi all,
I have a 1986 190E 2.3. My ignition switch seems to have gone bad. the key turns in the switch but does not have the spring tension when it is in the start position. (The key just stays in the start position and does not automatically return to on or run position) The dash and instrument panel lights come on but starter motor is not engaged when the key is turned to start position. The instrument panel lights now stay on even after key is removed. Is this a common problem with this car? The car has about 120,000 miles.
Any help is appreciated.

I have a 93 190E..what is the trick to getting the ignition switch to release. Key will not turn. I read you can insert paperclip into small hole on switch...?
