General Automatic Tranny Q's
Hi everybody,
I'm working on my wife's Honda Odyssey Automatic transmission.
I have a good amount of experience and tools as a hobbyist or I wouldn't even attempt it. The tranny began to slip badly in fourth gear allowing the engine to rev. Odyssey transmissions are notorious for this earlyfailure.
Before removing the engine/transmission assembly, I ran a computer diagnostic scan on the OB2 system which revealed onlya codethat engine was over-revving rpms in fourth gear. We already knew that. No other codes were detected.
Also, hoping it was a simple solenoid failure, I invested some time removing and bench-testing all of the external solenoids, and sensors. All are working fine and in good condition. Fluid in excellent condition. So I believe that we have the classic "slipping clutches"as described in many complaints about the vehicle.
Icarefully removed the engine/tranny assembly, noting all connections, separated, and disassembled the tranny. Here's the problem.Asside fromslightly worn differential bearing races, everything else seems to be in good order.Usually when I take take any tranny apart, there is some obvious damage like abadly worn fork or clutches. In this case I'm just not seeing any damage, so I must be missing something...
I have dissassembled the clutch-cages and looked at the internal clutch disks. There's still pad on them; I was expecting them to be shot and grinding metal, but no. My factory manual will be here this week. I thinking maybe they are too thin and need to be mic'd.
Thanks for any help or advice.
