engine cooling fan problem e220cdi 2000
Hi,
Can anyone help?
I have a e220 cdi 2000 and the engine cooling fan is staying on all the time.I have checked the fuses , temperature switch and the only thing I can think it may be is the engine fan control unit. It is a small box with cooling fins (silver) located under the (right hand drive)passenger side headlamp and accessable through the removal of passenger wheel arch liner .Will this cause the fault and I've noticed the car is running in limp mode ,only since this fan problem ?
Also I am a very recent Mercedes owner , having owned Bmws' previously. Are there any OE sites that you can find all parts for the car as I had on the web for Bmw?
Thanks.

RE: engine cooling fan problem e220cdi 2000
Why do you suspect the Fan ECU?
Why are you more concerned about the fan rather than why the car is in limp mode?
What makes you think the car is in Limp mode?
Is the Check Engine Light CEL is on? If not does the CEL work at startup? If the car is in limp the CEL should be on.
Possible that fan is on because the car thinks it is too hot. Failed temp sensor etc.
Need to get engine ECU codes AND supporting flash data read. This will narrow the field down as to what is wrong and when corrected may also resolve the fan problem.
I would suggest this order of responding to your problems.

Thanks for the reply, The only malfunction showing is engine fan visit workshop. The car is sluggish , especially on hills or under load , I had no problem previous to this , Consequently , after checking all related fuses and changing the temp. sensor , the only thing I could think of was the control unit . I have ordered a new one and will be here today via courier . If this problem is still there after fitting the unit , I will get the codes read .

I'm not convinced that it is in Limp. Is it changing gear or just sluggish?
You didn't say if CEL is on.
Subject to the ECU change get the codes and we will see where next.

Thanks Stuart,
I changed the unit and the problem was still present , so I took the car to Mercedes and they fixed it within 5 minutes .A blown fuse due to faulty fan control unit . I thought I had checked ALL the fuses but apparently the fuse was passenger side engine bay?
