ECU Malfunction?
Dear mod n mercfans.
I have a headache recently with my car an E class 200 W210 year 1998.
Historically goes like this (even I don't know whether it is related or not)
1.Door lock except driver position cannot be locked or unlock by infrared key.
2.During one journey and trapped in a traffic jam the temperature gauge showed increasingly hot till about 95'c ( and I have a feeling the the automatic fan not working) and the engine dies automatically.
3.The car could not be started till today(almost 1 week)- initially did a vigorous start(of course when trying to escape from 2 scene), the starter burn (and replaced)
Jump start failed, oil pump functioning, other parameter showed no unfunction light in the dashboard. Now the lock mechanism totally fail and the mirrow light blink simultaneously blue and red(I think they are confused too..p
Lately did a total replacement of wiring but still not solved the problem. My mechanic say it could be ECU failure and suggest for replacement.well it's a major decision and need a hundreds of thought.
couldn't this confirm by diagnostic test? or could this problem is due to cylinder head problem ?
Sorry for a long story.I am new and my english is not very good.Any one??Help!

if you press the button the second time, does it lock/unlock?
2.During one journey and trapped in a traffic jam the temperature gauge showed increasingly hot till about 95'c ( and I have a feeling the the automatic fan not working) and the engine dies automatically.
did actually look at the fan if it's working or not? few things can cause hi temp. radiator, thermostat, fan, etc.
3.The car could not be started till today(almost 1 week)- initially did a vigorous start(of course when trying to escape from 2 scene), the starter burn (and replaced)
was there an ignition on the sparkplugs? crankshaft position sensor okay?
Jump start failed, oil pump functioning, other parameter showed no unfunction light in the dashboard. Now the lock mechanism totally fail and the mirrow light blink simultaneously blue and red(I think they are confused too..p

Thank you Sleepwalker (do you actually sleep walker??hee)
Nope, 2'nd time push the botton does not do anything mechanical to the door.Previously I only do that in order to get green light looking at the mirrow( and start the car) or to get a red light (in which you can not start the car).Currently the blink simultaneously and you have to guess which (red or green)is in sequence order.
I did not actually look at the fan...just guessing .The water level in radiator was ok and not deteriorating from the start of journey.
No ignition spark.
Crankshaft position sensor?i have no idea.Sorry.
Thanks again 4 your concern.

You have more than one problem.
1. Overheating
2. Door lock problems.
3. Failure to start
a. Burnt starter motor
b. Failure to jump start
Diagnosis.
1. Overheating. Need to establish if fan IS or IS NOT working If not likely the fan controller. 95 deg C is only slightly above normal. Did you also have air con ON at the time? Is the water pump belt correctly tensioned?
2. Suspect flat battery has caused system to loose synchronisation. Need to reset. Could be PSE Pneumatic System Unit but at this stage need to ensure system is correctly synch'd.
3. Why is the battery flat. Battery age? Get checked at a garage. If dead it cannot be recharged. get a new one. Is the alternator working OK otherwise you may wreck another battery.
a. Burnt starter motor?? Very strange. Did you crank the car for a very long time and overheated the motor. this may also explain the flat battery?
3b. Failure to jump start? To many possibilities to list. Do you have a spark. Is there fuel at the fuel rail? Crank position sensor is a possibility but need to eliminate lots of possiblities first.
What wiring has been replaced and why?
It is extremely UNLIKELY (but possible) that the ECU controller is faulty but there could be a link if the wiring was buyrned for some reason. Replacement ECU is very expensive.
Need to get car scanned to see if any codes are present even if the CEL Check Engine Light is not on.
Once you have codes come back with additional detail if possible and we will see if we can add anything further.

Thank snanceki.
Yes,multiple failure.
1.Overheating- I did noticed previously that when the temp up to 85'c the fan will working and bring the temp down immediately.Lately the upper limit go up until the day reaching 95'c and the car died. The aircond was on during the travel day/and most of the time in my climate/hot country.Could be a water pump belt losing it's tension.
2.Battery level is in a recharge code.(green/recharge/red)One of the previous mechanic had test the battery voltage and said it's not weak.Failure of jump started further exclude that the main problem why the car could not start is not the battery.I own this car for the past 2 years and no battery replacement has been made.I have no idea the exact age of the battery.
3.Burnt starter motor- yes..I did crank for a long time and repeatedly, trying to escape from the crowd. It was a national celebration day and everybody is on the road travelling hometown...,andthe procedurecost me a new starter replacement.
4.All wires in the engine and gear had been replaced. Some wires had no 'rubber insulation in certain part (aging process??)and the current mechanic says that it might cause a short circuit ang kill the ECU.
Now I do not know what to do first.Get a diagnostic scan??Replaced ECU and see whether this is working??and cause a bancrupcy?/change the battery first??
For your info the authorised merc service is 700 km away and also cause a lot of money on towing. Now the car in a workshop well known for a merc n BMW repair and the only wshop nearby.(Towing to this shop already cost USD200)
What to do ?I ve no sound knowledge in car system(only start and drive is my specialty) and that mean liablity to various mechanic opinion( and this also killing me).
Thanks

first.
Get the car scanned. Both Bdy and Engine.
Second. If car doesn't crank get a new battery and check alternator works.
third check auxillary cooling fan works.
The ECU could be dead if the wiring was bad and a short occurred but usually ECU's are very robust unless they get voltage down the wrong wires.
I'd leave the ECU till the last possibility if it were me. As you say you will be bankrupt!
Going away for a few days.
good luck.

Dear Stuart
excuse me for basic question.,
Engine -using diagnostic software during cranking the engine?my car does not any sound on starting the engine.
Body- how /what is this?.
Happy day

There are Diagnostics on the Engine AND also other features like lights, windows, seats, air conditioning, sunrooof etc which are jointly known as "Body Electrics".
When you do a scan you should get as much information as possible since it helps with diagnosis.
Still think your Battery is DEAD.
Stuart.
