Default E320 Aircon EC light On

My 2000 model E320 aircon EC light is on all of the time when the aircon isON. I have had the gas checked and it is fully charged. A MB mechanic has told me I need a new compressor yet I feel there are other options that could be checked before taking this step. Has anyone had experience with this problem?
Thanks.

I should have added that with the EC light ON there is no cooling, as advertised.

I hd this problem several years ago. The EC light comes on as kind of protective mode when there is not enough presure in the system and the AC system cannot cool. The problem in my car was that there was a leak in the evaporator I had to spend a few thousand dollars.

You need to find out and diagnose where the problem is with the AC systemin your car.

The ec light comes on when the sensor for refrigerant pressure/temperature sees a fault. Now, if there is a leak, then yes, the ec light will come on as a result of the pressure loss. But, if that sensor is faulty( to which there is a DTB about this) it has the same result. The pressure sensor is faulty and doesn't sense pressure, therefore, to save the compressor from being damaged(because the control unit goes by the sensor reading to tell it if there is freon in the system), it shuts down the a/c system. Typically, the freon is good/full but the faulty reading from the refrigerant sensor causes the a/c module to shut the compressor off, therefore no cooling
