RE: CODE: P0170 & P1584
Hi,
P0170 is a Generic OBD (On Board Diagnostics) code and means Fuel Trim Bank 1. (Only 1 bank on the 230) P0171 = Too Lean P0172 = Too Rich
I do not have a definition for P1584 or most combinations of these numbers. Are you sure that this one is correct? P1XXX series codes are likely MB specific but my list still doesn't have a definition.
Fuel Trim is most likely pointing to the fact that the Engine Management System is outside of limit when conducting startup component checks (Like a PC booting) and since there is a risk of exceeding legal emmission levels it puts the MIL / CEL ON.
Personal experience suggests that there is a high probability that the resistance of the MAF (Mass Airflow Meter) is out of spec. This diagnosis can be confirmed by looking at the LTFT (Long Term Fuel Trim) values which can be read through a good OBD scan tool. If this exceeds a value something like 25 then this is the problem. The software has a limit at which it considers the MAF (or other components) faulty.
I've found that deposits on the thin hot film in the MAF cause its resistance to change over time.
Since your vehicle is 1998 I suspect that it is likely to have covered 50k+ miles. If so a possible solution which avoids replacing the MAF (never used this solution on 230 4 cyls but works a treat on 320 V6) is to...
Remove sensor from MAF (you will need a Security Torx screwdriver bit.....hole up the middle.... to achieve this) and soak / wash in non petrol based carb cleaner. (Toluene ideally). Carefully blow dry and reassemble. This should bring the startup component check within limit and result in lowering the LTFT over time
Of course the P1584 code may completely negate this advice.
Let us know how you get on.

Just found this which gives some additional MB codes.
It states that P1584 is Stop Light!!
