clicking, clunking,squeaking noise-rear axle

I have a 90' 300E and it sounds like the noise is coming from my left rear CV joint. Anyone had this problem and is it difficult or any special tools needed? Should I replace the left axle or just replace the CV joint? Also, it comes and goes[sm=WTFsgign.gif]
