Im new to the forum and have recently bought a 1981 300D. So far the car seems to run great except it frequently fails to lock and unlock. I heard that its a common issue with the older mercedes, could anyone please help with how to make the locks work again?

It's a vacuum issue. You need to isolate the leaking component(s) and replace it (them).
