Our cat converter on the 2001 CLK320 is broken (rattle when engine on), and I can't seem to find OEM or aftermarket replacement at the various e-stores, including those in this forum. Am I not searching for the right parts or is there another reason for it? Thanks.

 

I had a similar problem with a 98 CLK320 about two years ago (at 85K, just outside the 80K emissions warranty). After much research and frustration, I ended up letting a local Meineke (yes, I did say Meineke) shop do the job for $650 (two underside cats only). Passed emissions, no future exhaust problems (@ 135K now). I still have the original receipt at the house, and it probably has the part numbers - or at least a contact at the store - on it). I'm sure I'll be sternly reprimanded for my use of a discount chain on a MB - but they did a did a good, job, warrantied the work for 12 mos/12k, and saved me at least $1K. If you're shameless, you might want to give it a shot.
