I have a 1992 400E the recently had the ASR light come on, and yes, the car went into LH mode. I took the time to build a binary code reader, and finally received a set of error codes today.

I have the ODB1 plug with only the following plugs populated with a connector: 1-3, 4, 6-8, 17, 30. The fault codes I received were few - No fault on pin 4, the codes 5, 6, & 7 on pin 8, No fault on pin 17, and no code read out on the other pins.

I pulled the wheels and the sensors appear to be normal, and I checked the tires for preopr pressure (no change in sensor after correcting tires). I'm at a loss. Anyone have any ideas? I'm concerned that error code 5 on pin 8 may indicate excessive heat in the control module box (F-23).

Any help would be appreciated as I can't leave the family without transportation. Thanks...

 

If you short pin 5 and 1, for a second, the ASR lamp will flash, count the flashes.. that is the code. You can then try to erase it, short pin 5 and one for at least 10 seconds (some says 15 seconds), then it should go out.

 

Thanks for the info. Ended up building a pulse reader from parts for about $20. Found I had to short pins for about 15 seconds to clear the codes.
