Question Battery with 4 terminals for 1979 240D

I am considering buying a 1979 240D. I've been to see it twice. The body is good, but I haven't gotten it running yet. The battery that was in it was dead. The current owner, who inherited the car and doesn't know much about it, took the battery to the store and got a replacement, so I went back for another visit. Problem: The first battery had 4 terminals--two on top and two on the front just below the others. The cables both branch into two and each has two clamps corresponding to the 4 battery terminals. The replacement battery has only two terminals. I connected the top terminals, which provided power for lights and starter, but the glow plugs would not work. My assumption is that the secondary clamps and wires provide power to the glow plugs, and maybe more. I can't find any mention on the web of 4 terminal car batteries, and the guy at the store that supplied the replacement battery said he'd never heard of a battery with 4 terminals. Are these batteries standard on 240Ds? Or is this an oddball? Any help would be appreciated.
