Default Battery

1. Is it true that battery in Benz is a life warranty? I hardly put in 6500 miles a year on my E420 - 1997. Twice in the last 2 months, I have to jump start the car. The LED never show me anything concerning the battery.
2. My gazatte for the CD never register inside the playING area. It get stuck almost three quarter inside the player unit.

CAN ANYONE HELP ME WITH THESE PROBLEMS?

The battery is good for 4 years 50,000 in warranty. After that plan on 4/5 years, the good news roadside assistance will come out to you and change it at N/C for labor, probably $125, they charge at the daler for labor.

I don't know who the vendor is, but MB OEM batteries are pretty bad.

I will not install another MB battery. I now have Sear's DieHard in my car -- no more battery blues.

Note: Sear's battery for MB is called DieHard International, not DieHard Gold or Silver, or any of that. CCA may be different from MB specs. But, heck...it outlasts the OEM battery.

Battery should last 4 to 5 years.
The less often it is used the worse it is for the battery.
The more short trips (starts) and slow running the worse it is for a battery.
Once a battery needs to be "charged" it is on its way out since chemical changes have caused non reversible damaged the battery.

Thank you guys. The Benz manual stated that the battery will die with the car. I guess they are wrong. Since I bought the car used, I cannot say how old is the battery. I will replace the battery with DieHard International rather than charging it again. Any solution to the CD magazine that will not fully realise the CD in the chamber? The first time this happened was after I got a jump when my battery was weak.

I would get your radio code ready, you will need it. One of the reasons I suggest MB roadside, is they come out with the code, Sears has no idea, anf d their batteries are not that great. MB batteries were Varda made in Europe I dont know if that is still the case, someone said Interstate. I would make sure the battery has a vent hose!

I know the radio code. I wonder how long fly_major_fly is been having the Die Hard International and does it have a vent hose. Can't I get the Varda at any auto store and how am I going to know if it has a vent hose? I have AAA roadside but I wonder why I need to call them since I believe it is easy to change a battery from any car or is there a trick in changing battery in a Benz?

HI,
I think manufacturer is Varta, not Varda. Maybe this is why you can't locate one.
If Varta is good enough for MB / BMW etc I would stick with them but most modern batteries are more than adequate especially if you fit heavy duty i.e. Diesel vs Petrol battery etc.
If the battery is in the boot (a confined space) IT MUST HAVE A VENT. Under the bonnet is less important but best to changfe like for like.
Most modern batteries have the facility to carry the car manufacturers vent facility over to the new battery.

Somewhat over the top to suggest that any battery will last the "Life of Car".

There is a trick to changing batteries in many modern cars.
If the battery is disconnected memory settings MAY be lost unless they use the sort of memory which is NOT lost on power down. To overcome this a small back up battery is connected across the battery terminals during the change.

However if the memory is lost it is only a matter of resetting but this can be frustrating if you are not familiar with the procedures for the particular car. e.g. ASR needs steering to be normalised. Some cars need windows to be moved from full down to full up etc.
One of the most annoying is the radio code. This is lost to prevent THEFT of the head unit. Unless youy know it it is hassle to get it and you may be without your radio for some time.
Stuart.

Likely you need to get the dealer to recode the radio head unit/CD deck after memory lost following flat battery.
Coding (dealeronly) is a way to discourage theft of the CD units.
However it could be something different but since it was associated with flat battery you may be OK.

Thanks. I will work on the Varta battery. I'm in US and I believe you're in UK, the brand name may not be in US. Do you know anything about DieHard International battery? My battery is located underneath the back seat. Or maybe I should replace with exact brand which I do not know right now but will check later.

The radio and tape player work, only the CD player. Before going to the dealer, I think it may be advisable to take the unit out & see if something stuck inside, probably label, etc. attached to the CD. Does the CD deck has a seperate code or its only one code for CD unit, radio & tape player?
