Default BAS ESP light

I have a 2003 SLK320. The BAS ESP light came on and stays on. Now the CHECK ENGINE light has come on and stays on as well. Are these related? I really don't want to take it to a dealer for a diagnostic check if this is not a serious issue. What concerns me is that the check engine light is now on. Any thoughts? Thanks.

You can have the DTC's (Diagnostic Trouble Codes causing the lights to light) read and reset at your local AutoZone for free. Have them give you the displayed codes and post them here....someone can help figure it out with you from that point.

Thanks, Bob! I'll check with AutoZone.

Autozone may only be able to give you the codes for the engine/trans Check Engine light.

Ideally you want a full scan which includes the codes for the EPS etc which are not engine related.

IF you have the EPS etc light on you should get the codes read as soon as possible.

Unlikely cause but all systems are sensitive to voltage. Is your battery (age?) and alternator OK? Measure voltage at battery terminals with engine off, and on both at idle and say 2000 revs.
Should be greater then 12.5 when OFF and about 14.5 at 2000 revs. Batteries go bad at about 4 years.

The codes will tell us what is wrong since changing parts ***** nilly can be very expensive and potentially make matters worse.
