Automatic Tranny Shift Concerns

Automatic Tranny Shift Concerns
I have a 1985 190D, 275,000.
When I start out after a stop, the transmission is in second gear. It won't go into first unless I give it a good amount of pedal. When I do this, it shifts nicely throughout the gears. Could it be something as simple as a low idle? Any ideas?

RE: Automatic Tranny Shift Concerns
Ken,
My owners manual indicates that your observation is correct. The 190D with the shift selector in "3" or "D" will start out in 2nd gear when accelerating gently. Only when you accelerate hard will the transmission shift down to 1st.
