Hi,

I just purchased a used 1990 190E 2.5-16 and i noticed that the ASD light on the dash is always on, even if the engine is not yet started but the key is on.

this is my first benz, so i am not familiar with its systems yet. can someone help me to locate the problem? is there a diagnostic port i need to work with - if so, please let me know where its located and how do i use it?

by the way, what is the ASD for? i drive the car around the city and i cant seem to feel anything wrong, even though the ASD light is continuously on.

possible fault:
front left or right vehicle speed sensor (on the wheel), brake light switch, ASD valve valve, or (knock on wood)... the ASD control unit itslef.

Anti Skid Differential. it prevents the car to spin during acceleration by reducing the speed from another wheel.

thank you for taking the time to reply. can you tell me where the ASD valve as well as the ASD control unit are located?

also, if i fail to fix this problem, are there other parts in the car that would be affected? or do i just lose the ASD capability? I am asking because i am in the philippines and parts for this kind of car are not easy to get here. so i'm thinking, if its the ASD unit itself, i might as well kill it because i use the car for city driving only, and its an automatic anyway so no worries there about spinning during acceleration.

what do you say? your advise is highly appreciated.

Hi SLeepwalker,

i put in a jumper cable at terminals 1 & 5 and the ASD light flashed 8 times. according to the pics you sent me, its either the stop lamp switch or the ASD valve.

can you give me an idea where to look for the ASD valve?
