Default ASD Light comes on!

Hi i have a 1988 190E 2.5 16v Cosworth ( UK MODEL)
The ASD light is lit, i have been told my diff may be at fault, but only noticed the light come on sometime after jetting the engine bay.
On close inspection it seems i may have got water in the ASD unit, (OOPS!)
Is there any way of finding out what is causing the fault, or a simple test for the ASD unit

Thanks for you time

the differential can never get faulty, except for those little clutches on the side which can wear out in time.

check the speed sensor for resistance.
