My 2000 A160 developed an annoying sudden 'stiffness' about 2/3rds of a turn back from full right lock, not every time but has increased to nearly every time in 2 weeks. Then the pwr steering failed completely. Re-starting the engine cured the problem, but every other day or so it failed again. I have had the steering pump changed, but both problems have come back just as before. Can any-one help me to find a cure?

 

About a month ago my 1998 A160 Avantgarde began to lose power steering when I turned the steering wheel almost all the way to right or left. Switching the engine off/on, reactivated the power steering. I also think that if I turn the ignition key half way, wait a 5-10 sec, and then start the engine, the loss of power steering seems to be less likely. Anyhow the problem seems to be getting worse. If I can fix it myselfit would be worth it. Otherwise the car would unfortunately be destined for scrap. Hope someone can help.
