Default 89 190E Automatic Transmission won't change gears ?

Hello, my daughter's 89 190E 2.6 Automatic Transmission has recently begun to not change gears past 2nd or 3rd , I believe, without juggling the gear shift to Neutral and back to the "D" position while going above 45 mph ? And this does not happen all the time consistently, sometimes it won't even come out of 2nd or 3rd where we are running 4,700 to 5,500 rpm and seemingly burning up the engine... the transmission fluid level is normal .
P.S. we can sometimes not get the vehicle in "park" with the gear shift either ? maybe this is a secondary issue ?
Is there something I can look at to help with the high end gear change or is it time to spend the super $$ on transmission repair ?
Thanks for all your help here,
Padge

Well alrighty then,... thought I'd post the resolution, or part thereof... I ended up taking the 190E to the Dealership to diagnose,... luckily the maintenance mgr. I dealt with was wrong with his immediate response of "oh you most likely need a new transmission" !!! Turns out the report I got back and fix, was 1. Low on Tran Fluid , and 2. Replaced Shifter Bushing, and 3. Replaced worn Front Flex Disc .
Having said this and paid $545 for the fix,... all transmission problems are gone !
The only followup issue I had, surprisingly, was a garage floor FULL OF TRANSMISSION FLUID for several days as the over-filled transmission leaked !!
