Default 88 560SL Steering Gearbox

New to forum - Hello to all! 94k miles on car - love my roadster! Have excess play in steering wheel. Appears to be gearbox (have had tie-rods, linkages replaced). Has anyone ever removed and rebuilt/replaced one and can provide steps/directions? Also, suggestions on rebuilding gearbox vs buying reman. Thanks in advance!

Default Your post - Steering Gearbox

I too own an 88' 560SL which I just purchased. Always wanted one. It has 130k miles and overall is in great condition albeit some wear & tear. I too have what appears to be 1) slack in the steering wheel/control....likely due to worn steering gearbox (as like you, my tie-rods, linkage has been previously changed).

I took the car to a local Mercedes--Benz dealer friday to have the assess what the car needs, re: 200 pt inspection for $250.00. Hopefully, they will give me an accurate and accountable list of what repairs I need to include the steering slack as well as some transmission problems I am experiencing.

Good luck with your's and do let me know what you end up finding out.
