How complicated would an '86 300E head gasket be?
Thank You.

I have never done this but it would seem no more difficult than the similar repair on any other car. A bit simpler, perhaps, because you don't have to remove a lot of extra stuff to get to it. Why? Is someone quoting you an excessive price, just 'cause it's a Mercedes?

I have replaced many a head gaskets in my time but that 300 is a BEAR!!!. It is next to impossible to get that timing set back on right the first time. Also I would never just replace the gasket. There is a reason the gasket failed in the first place. I would always have the head reworked. It could have gotten hot and warped the head. Also if you don't rework the head that valve guides and seals will start leaking. $2000 is a reasonable price to get that done. That's just my opinion.

Thank You.
i'm just afraid of hidden problems encountered in such a big project.
and yes, i will be sending the head out to the machine shop for evaluation/repair
and the straightedge will come out for block deck measurement.
Thanks again.
