Default 500 SL Becker Radio Issues

I have a 1995 500 SL - the radio is a standard Becker unit with cassette and a link to a Bose six disc changer in the trunk.
Problem is that the backlight and/or the LCD display is broken. Radio works fine - toi the extent i can figure it out blind. Any ideas or places to go in the San Diego area for repairs?

I had same problem. I found another radio head on ebay, installed in 10 minutes. Had to order small removal keys to take out radio head from dash. Easy job though. If I had not found a radio head assembly so quick on Ebasy, I would have used:

Radioman wants $150 for the job – which sounds high. Where did you get the tools? Isn’t there a radio code you need – does it all link up nicely with the Bose changer in the trunk? W

$150 is a bit high, but you will get a rebuilt head unit with all of the cassette mechanisms checked out and belts replaced, etc., as I know it. I was lucky and found one quickly in eBay. The tools are called "MB Radio removal keys or tools". Can be found in eBay or Google. Most Beckerradiohead units in this era of 1990s cars will fit. I had a Becker-Mexico version with German symbols (I imported the car) and replaced with a Becker-American version and the replacement used head unit had all the lights working. I need the six CD changer in the trunk rebuilt and plan on using the radioman, as I would rather notput in another used one as these CD units fail a lot until they are rebuilt. Radio code should be with your owner’s manual, but when I replaced with another used head unit, the radio code was on a sticker on the radio head unit.Make sure if you get another used radio head unit, you ask for the new code. Hookup was exactly the same, unplug old, plug in new, about three different connections.

I sent my radio and AMP for repair to this outfit in Florida.

They may know of a local repair shop that can help you. For value, I would rather have the orig. radio than some replacement. Work was first class.

I had the LCD display replaced by La Jolla Audio in San Diego for $150. Nice guy - Cleve - knew what he was doing and was quick.

Note to 1995 SL 500 owners - the radio fort hat year was - believe it or not - was an Alpine. looks identical to the Becker, but OEM was an Alpine
