240D instrument lights

Hello to all,
I am a newbie MB owner ('81, 240D, 4cyl, 4spd, 235K miles). Last night was, for the first time, driving it at night when I realized none of the dash (instrument panel) lights came on. (Thanks for the rear dome light to check the speedo...) I also noticed that the glove box light is not working.
The first thing I checked was the fuse box and all fuses appeared to be fine, although I did not remove them and check with a continuity tester. I assume that since ALL the lights are out it's probably NOT a matter of bulbs. Is there any place I should check for a wiring problem typical to this model?
(By the way. all the idiot lights along the bottom of the cluster ARE working...)
Thanks,
AJ
