No, you can buy a tester dip stick at your dealer. don't fee bad, I have a friend with a 04 C Class and there is no tranny or oil dipstick. You have to relay on the dashboard read out for the engine oil. At least my 99 Class has a oil dipstick but no tranny.
Someone recently posted this on Club 202. This is for the 722.6 transmission. Not sure if that is for the 1997 or not.

Can you explain this in english ??? How long is the dipstick ?? 66+10+11+34+11=132mm or 5.196850393700788 inches I think that is just the tip ????? Does the stick hit the bottom of the pan ??? I used an old bike brake cable housing to see how far it was to the bottom of the tube and the fluid level was about 5" from the end. The service manual I have tells to use synthetic trans oil only. Does it have to be MB oil ??

These dipsticks are about $45 from merc specialists the last time I looked, but as I got told, run the car until normal operating temp and insert something flexible until it goes no further, if its an inch from the bottom its low, if it three inches then you're ok!!
I had the 722.603 transmission in my c180 what a s**t that was!! I posted my original message around the 17th Feb '05 in the newbie section,(If I knew how to link it I would!!) take a look and try and get hold of a guy called SLEEPWALKER, this guy knows his stuff.

Thanks for the info..
I could probably search one down. They have some discount parts at http://www.autopartswarehouse.com but they seem to be a pool of on-line parts stores with different names but all ship out of the same place. Being half German and half Italian makes me the kind of person that would rather make it than buy it. If I can't build it than I break down and ask mywife for some cash after all it is her car. I worked on MB trucks for a number of years and had to custom make some tools for various tasks. I retired about 7 years ago mostly due to health issues ( too much clutch dust in the 70's) She has been driving MB cars since 1966 and some of the old ones were a trip to work on. The new models fix themselves push a couple secret buttons on the radio or the climate control unit and it tells you what to change. They coat and cover everything to keep them quiet so noises will come out of the strangest places.
If I knew about this site 20 years ago I could have saved allot of time and bloody knuckles.

Funny enough I also used an old brake cable outer from a bike to test the level and mine at the time was only 3 inches, from past experience and alot of fluid changes by my reckoning the 722.60 auto box takes 6.6 litres of fluid from dry,(Including the draining of the Torque converter) over filling will cause it to perform erratically and under filling will also. Myself personnally, I advise that the oil is MB synthetic because I've heard that other stuff just damages the trans causing 'X' amount of problems and silly amounts of money.
Best of luck
