1993 E300 Rear Differential Leak
Greetings Mercedes Tech:
I'm a new member here. I am quite fond of my 1993 E300 3.2 sedan.
THANK YOU for being here.
The local Mercedes dealer just told me that the leaking rear differential will cost $978.75 to repair ($745 labor + $150 parts + tax). It is a slow "seep" (garage floor under car is DRY). Dealer says it's probably not leaking from rear (machined part), but from either SIDE or from the front (PINION). The rear diff looks "wet", and when I touched the very bottom, there was just one drop of differential fluid there (clean oil). Again, no drops under car, so VERY SLOW LEAK.
Someome told me there is a new "cover" for the rear differential that fixes this.
Is this something I could repair at the auto hobby shop at the local air base? They have lifts, or is it quite complicated & worth $1,000.00 for DEALER to repair?
THANK YOU for your attention to this matter.
